Mug Ni Dal Ni Khichdi / Moong Dal Ki Khichdi

Mug Ni Dal Ni Khichdi / Moong Dal Ki Khichdi is a simple khichdi, perfect one pot meal, also perfect during winters. This khichdi is made with a mild tempering and its easily made. I have served with kadhi. 

Rice, 1 cup
Moong Dal 3/4th cup
Tomato 1, chopped
Turmeric Powder 1 tsp
Red Chili powder 1 tsp
Salt as per taste
Ghee 1 tbsp
Jeera / Cumin seeds 1 tsp
Green Chili 1, slit
Asafoetida 1 tsp
Water 6 to 8 cups
Freshly chopped coriander leaves


Wash and Soak rice and moong dal in water for 10 - 15 minutes.

In a pressure cooker, heat ghee. Once heated add cumin seeds. As it splutters, add asafoetida, green chili, and tomato and saute for a minute.

Now add soaked rice and moong dal. Mix.

Add 6 to 8 cups of water, as per consistency needed.
{I added 7 cups, as I wanted did not want a thick consistency}.

Now add turmeric powder, red chili powder, salt and mix well. Allow it to simmer for 2 minutes. Then close the cooker and cook for 5 whistles.

Once cooled, open the cooker, mix the khichdi.

Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot. 
{Khichdi tends to thicken soon as it gets cold, so serve hot}.
